Hospitals in Poor Health

A survey of 21 hospitals by the Supreme Chamber of Inspection (NIK) has found that many have been dealing with the national health-care system financial shortfalls by reporting falsely bloated expenses. One hospital in the Podlaskie province, for instance, reported treatments on people who, it later turned out, were dead at the time. Another, in south-central Poland, allegedly treated the perfectly healthy. In total, 17 of the 21 hospitals included in the survey were shown to have improperly charged the health system for services rendered. NIK inspectors also found signs that some hospital administrators showed gross negligence: one paid nearly a half a million zlotys for water, because he failed to get someone to fix a broken water main for nearly two years. The chamber alerted prosecutors to 10 cases it believes warrant further criminal investigation.
