Samoobrona MPs Going Down

With tears in her eyes, Samoobrona farmers' protest party MP Renata Beger gave up her parliamentary immunity on Wednesday and will now face charges of falsifying signatures nominating her for election in 2001. In a long, passionate speech delivered to a deserted lower house of parliament, Beger accused government and other party officials of concocting a "political plot" to discredit her honest efforts.
But faced with a vote to deprive her of immunity, she gave in at last. "In order to show that I'm not scared to face trial, and more importantly that I'm not scared of my accusers, I give up my parliamentary immunity for this case," said the MP.
Beger has become something of a figure of fun over the last six months through her role as a less than penetrating member of the committee investigating the Lew Rywin corruption scandal. She also unfortunately told the Super Express daily that she "loved sex like a horse loves its oats" and that she has "sex in her eyes". If she is convicted of the charges, which relate to thousands of allegedly falsified entries on a list of signatures she had to turn in to run for office, she faces losing her place in parliament.
Also on Wednesday, Samoobrona MP and party chairwoman Danuta Hojarska was given a suspended sentence of 18 months for selling farming equipment covered by a loan she did not pay off. Perhaps more painfully, she will also be forced to pay the bank PLN 48,000 in compensation.
